God Reveals What Humans Cannot Even Imagine

1 Corinthians 2:8-10
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: 'What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived' – the things God has prepared for those who love him – these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. (NIVUK)

Human pride believes in itself.  That is its problem: because human beings are not God, they do not know everything and they do not have the power to fulfil their own promises.  So it is a relief to know that the Lord is in command and His Word is at work.  The men who plotted to crucify Jesus, and the crowds who supported them, had no idea that they were working for God.

Salvation was not mankind's idea.  Human pride never believes it needs saving; but when its victims fall, they cry out for help … so it is wonderful that God has provided a route from despair to glory through Jesus.  The whole of the Trinity was involved: the Father's love conceived the strategy, the Son obediently left heaven to die on earth and the Spirit reveals the Divine master-plan to human beings.

God's Spirit is the person who speaks to sinners, convincing them of their hopelessness without salvation, and shining a light onto Jesus who has died to save them (John 16:8-11).  Without His illumination we stay in the dark about God's love and about the pivotal role of Jesus Christ in taking the guilt of our sins so that we might be released from condemnation.  The Spirit has all of God's knowledge and wisdom; and knows everything about us.  He alone can reveal the love of God to our hearts urging us to submit to the grace of Christ (Ephesians 3:5).

Nothing can stop God's salvation plan.  The death of Jesus, which humanly was supposed to be an end to Him, was the beginning of His worldwide church.  The blood of today's martyrs is the seed of tomorrow's church growth; indeed it has proved to be an essential component in enabling the glory of God to come to a blackened earth.  In the extreme circumstances of human obstinacy as well as in the obedience of gospel preaching, the Holy Spirit propels the message of salvation (1 Corinthians 2:4); and it is the responsibility of each individual to respond to that message.  So, when disaster strikes in your workplace or community, the Spirit is speaking through the way the believers respond; and when you share the gospel of Jesus, the Spirit is speaking.  Nothing can stop Him speaking or stop His salvation plan.  So face today with confidence that the Lord is at work!

Prayer
Lord of the Word. Thank You for speaking to me by Your Holy Spirit, convincing me that I am a sinner in need of salvation. Forgive me for forgetting that You are always at work, even in the dark circumstances of life, and that You continue to speak through the gospel. Please help me to be bold and speak faithfully about Jesus without fear – trusting Your Spirit to speak, confirming the message, urging repentance and enabling faith. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
