His Works Testified to the Deity of Jesus

John 5:36
‘I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given me to finish – the very works that I am doing – testify that the Father has sent me. (NIVUK)

When you want to know the truth about a person, examine what they do.  Jesus used the evidence of His life as a second witness to His claim of being the Son of God (the first was the evidence of John the Baptist (John 5:33), and the third would be what the Scriptures say about Him (John 5:37-40)).  Jesus’ miracles were truly remarkable; they were supernatural, and John uses them as authentic signs of His divinity.

But some may say, surely God empowered Old Testament leaders and Apostles to do miracles?  Yes, but there was a great difference with Jesus.  No servant of God ever claimed to be equal with God except Jesus (John 5:18).  And no miracle-worker allowed people to worship them, except Jesus (Matthew 28:9-10).

The work that the Father had given Jesus to complete was even bigger than His other miracles (John 14:11).  His key task was to bring salvation to all who believed in Him (Acts 4:12).  That required His death (Matthew 20:28).  But had He not risen again, there would be no evidence that the sacrifice had been accepted (Acts 2:24).  So, having died as the sacrificial Lamb of God for the sins of the world, He arose from the dead (Mark 9:9).  That amazing miracle has led to countless other miracles as millions of people from every culture have received new life in Christ.  His light has transformed the darkness in many hearts; they have been saved as they have believed in the crucified Jesus who is now alive.

The work that Christ did on Calvary was complete, but its effect was just beginning.  The conclusion will be seen when all those who have received His new life are gathered into His Kingdom (Revelation 5:9-10).  So, there is a sense in which the church is now working with Jesus to see the completion of Christ's work (Colossians 1:24).  Of course, we cannot add anything to what Christ's death achieved, but we can tell people about it.  Who is best placed to explain what Christ's death has done for you, at your workplace and in your community?  Surely it is you!  Who is best able to tell your friends and colleagues that Jesus is the Son of God?  Let them see your new life and judge for themselves that Jesus has done a miracle in your life.

Prayer
God of all power. Thank You for Jesus, Your Son and my Saviour. Thank You that He has completed the work of dying for my sins. Forgive me when His precious gift of eternal life means so little to me. Please stir up my soul to be truly grateful for all that He has done for me, and give me a fresh desire to share it with other people with whom I live and work. In Jesus' Name. Amen.
