Is Faithful Marriage Too Serious A Commitment?

Matthew 19:10-12

Jesus had been questioned about divorce: was it permissible, if a wife displeased her husband (Matthew 19:3-6)?  Jesus took them back to the creation account in Genesis 2:24 to demonstrate that God's plan was for permanent, and not temporary, marriage.  The divorce and remarriage cycle had more in common with adultery than maturity (Deuteronomy 24:4; Matthew 19:9).

Is Humility Too Great A Cost?

Matthew 19:13-15

Humility is not common in a sinful world, especially amongst adults who think that they are 'someone'.  As parents were pushing their children forwards for Jesus to commend them to His Father and bless them, the disciples were upset that He was paying them too much attention.  After all, children were not important, they thought.  So the men from Jesus' team decided to stop the flow of youngsters who were getting in the way of the 'real ministry' as they saw it.

Is Giving Too Great A Cost?

Matthew 19:16-22

Most people believe that if they can do enough good things then God will accept them, like the proud Pharisee in Jesus' parable (Luke 18:9-14).  But they are wrong.  This episode reveals the personal spiritual insecurity of a young man.  He was religious and devout, but he instinctively felt that he had not done enough to earn God's favour.  He knew that he did not have a living relationship with God and that he did not deserve eternal life.

Wealth Makes It Difficult To Follow Jesus

Matthew 19:23-26

When we think that we can manage without Jesus - we do!  Whatever contributes to that state of arrogance is an idol, a false god, a spiritual obstacle to relating to the true God.  Wealth, in its many forms, gives a false sense of security which appears to make faith in God redundant.  When Jesus said it was 'easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God', some commentators suggest that Jesus’ metaphor was of a camel kneeling down and shuffling through a narrow archway.  But the word used is clear – how can a camel go

The Reward For Genuine Grateful Sacrifice

Matthew 19:27-30

The disturbing encounter with a rich young man (Matthew 19:16-22) stirred the disciples to have an intense discussion with Jesus about the spiritual values connected with wealth.  He said that it was difficult for rich people to be saved because if they trusted in their riches, they would not sacrifice that security to follow Him (Matthew 19:21-26).  But God can change people's hearts.

Working For The Master

Matthew 20:1-7

Some Christians believe that the church is part of their leisure experience; as warming as a barbeque on a summer's night, or as refreshing as a dip in the pool at the end of a long day.  Jesus said that the kingdom of heaven is about servants working for a master.  And the work He envisaged was not an office job with central heating and air conditioning; it was labouring hard in a vineyard.  The Apostle Paul described it as an escalation from work, to hard labour, and unrelenting pain (1 Thessalonians 1:3).

Rewards From The Master

Matthew 20:8-12

God is very kind and generous.  But God's people are sometimes envious of His big-heartedness to others.  Jesus told a parable about the kingdom of heaven, likening it to a vineyard with manual labourers.  The men hired at the beginning of the day agreed a fixed wage, but later additions to the workforce were only promised a 'fair wage' (Matthew 20:1-7).  However, things did not turn out as expected.

Envy Hates Generosity To Others

Matthew 20:13-16

When other people get more than you get, and they have done less to deserve it, how do you feel?  Jesus' parable about the vineyard labourers (Matthew 20:1-12), who were all paid the same amount even though some had hardly done any work, concluded with those who had worked all day complaining.  They had done more work than the late-comers, and yet everybody received the same wages.  Surely that was unjust.

Intentional Path To Suffering

Matthew 20:17-19

The disciples were the trainee apostles. In such a short time, Jesus called the men He had chosen, and exposed them to a wide variety of ministry situations - including many sessions of teaching after which He would explain the parables. All this training was to equip them for the time when they would lead the fledgling church, in Jesus' absence, under the direction of the Holy Spirit. But that time of training was shortly going to come to an end: violently, on the cross.

Family Favouritism

Matthew 20:20-24

Zebedee had two sons in his fishing business, James and John, before Jesus called the young men to follow Him. Their mother was probably called Salome (comparing the names of the women in Matthew 27:56 and Mark 15:40). She was undoubtedly committed to Jesus, going in the early morning to anoint His body in the tomb. She was also committed to her two boys and wanted the very best for them.
